  • News
From humble beginnings to a renowned name in the hospitality industry, Sunil Wadhwani and his story encapsulates the essence of the American Dream. Born in Asia and raised in Texas, Wadhwani’s entrepreneurial spirit was sparked early in life by his parents’ perseverance and dedication. Transitioning from a family-run retail store to owning a chain of successful hotels, Wadhwani has carved out a significant niche in the business world. This interview revisits his journey, highlighting his business strategies, personal inspirations, and the challenges he overcame. What inspired you to start your own business? My inspiration to become an entrepreneur was deeply influenced by my desire to build something significant and my early experiences in retail. After working with my parents in their retail/wholesale store, I recognized the potential in branching out on my own. The real turning point came when I partnered with La Quinta as one of their first new franchisees in 2000. This opportunity was a major stepping stone that allowed me to explore and eventually expand into the hospitality industry. Can you describe the growth of your business over the years? Certainly, the journey from my first venture into owning a small hotel with 65 rooms to now managing 8 locations with nearly 1000 rooms has been exhilarating. Starting with a single hotel, I expanded into multiple brands including La Quinta/Wyndham, Motel 6, and Marriott. Each step in this expansion was a blend of strategic planning and seizing the right opportunities at the right time, which has been crucial in navigating the competitive landscape of the hospitality industry. What does an average day look like for you as CEO? As CEO, my days are highly structured and dynamic. I start my day early, ensuring that I personally visit each hotel location. During these visits, I meet with the general managers to discuss operational issues and provide solutions on the spot. After completing the rounds, I spend the rest of the day at the office where I dive into financial reviews and strategic meetings with my management team. This routine helps me stay connected with the day-to-day operations and ensures that our service standards are consistently met. What are some of your proudest moments in your career? On a personal level, my marriage of almost 35 years and my family are my greatest joys. Professionally, some of the proudest moments include being recognized as Franchise of the Year multiple times for both La Quinta and Motel 6. Additionally, becoming a part of the Marriott family, a highly prestigious brand, was a significant milestone that highlighted our commitment to excellence in hospitality. What challenges have you faced in your role? The hospitality industry is fraught with challenges ranging from market dynamics to economic downturns. Initially, our business heavily relied on travelers from across the Mexican border. A shift in this trend required us to quickly adapt and find new customer segments. Moreover, the overbuilding and market saturation in South Texas posed severe challenges, as did the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested our resilience and adaptability like never before. How would you describe your management style? My management style is very hands-on yet empowering. While I have a daily presence at our properties, I strongly believe in empowering our general managers and their teams. This empowerment allows them to make decisions and manage day-to-day operations effectively, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability within the team. What are your top priorities as CEO? As CEO, my top priorities include maintaining strong relationships with our lenders and financial institutions, ensuring our management team is well-trained and focused, and keeping our properties in excellent condition. Preparing for future challenges and ensuring the satisfaction of our guests are also critical components of my role, as these elements are fundamental to sustained success. What is your vision for your business? My vision for the business is to expand our room count to 1000 across all our brands. I aim to develop a robust management team that allows me to gradually step back from daily operations and enjoy more personal time, while still ensuring the business thrives on the foundation we have built. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the hospitality industry? For anyone starting out, my advice is to listen intently and learn continuously. The hospitality industry is complex and dynamic, and understanding its nuances from the ground up is invaluable. I would encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to immerse themselves in every aspect of the industry, from customer service to financial management, to build a comprehensive skill set. What were some early influences that shaped your career? My career was significantly shaped by my early life experiences, especially the influence of my parents. They moved to the United States with only $100, facing numerous challenges but ultimately achieving success through relentless effort. This instilled in me a deep appreciation for hard work and resilience. Additionally, my early involvement in the family retail business provided me with firsthand experience in commerce, customer interaction, and the basics of running a business, which were invaluable as I ventured into my own enterprises. Can you share a significant obstacle you overcame in your business? One of the most significant obstacles I faced was during the economic downturn when the housing market collapsed. At that time, I was involved in a 20-acre housing development project which faced immense challenges due to the market conditions. It was a difficult period, but through strategic adjustments and perseverance, I managed to navigate through those turbulent times. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and reinforced my commitment to strategic planning. How do you balance personal life and business responsibilities? Balancing personal life and business responsibilities has always been a challenge, given the demands of running a large enterprise. My approach is to prioritize time management and ensure that while business is a significant part of my life, it does not overshadow my personal commitments. I cherish the time spent with my family, and they are a huge part of why I strive for success. It's about making quality time count and being present during those moments. What future trends do you see in the hospitality industry? The hospitality industry is evolving rapidly, and one trend I see gaining momentum is the integration of technology to enhance guest experiences. From automated check-ins to personalized room settings controlled by smartphones, technology will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of hospitality. Additionally, sustainability will become increasingly important, with more hotels adopting green practices to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. How do you foster innovation within your team? Fostering innovation starts with creating an environment where every team member feels empowered to share their ideas and take initiative. We encourage regular brainstorming sessions and have implemented a feedback loop that allows us to evaluate and refine ideas continuously. Recognizing and rewarding innovative solutions also plays a crucial role in motivating the team to think creatively and push boundaries. What role has mentorship played in your career? Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career development. Learning from seasoned entrepreneurs and industry experts provided me with insights and guidance that were critical during the early stages of my business journey. As a result, I am a strong advocate of mentorship and currently mentor young entrepreneurs, sharing my experiences and lessons to help them navigate their paths. How do you approach customer satisfaction in your hotels? Our approach to customer satisfaction is rooted in personalized service and consistent quality. We strive to make each guest's stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible by paying attention to their needs and preferences. Regular staff training ensures that our team is equipped to handle various customer interactions professionally and efficiently, ensuring that our guests always have a memorable experience. What strategies have you employed to adapt to economic downturns? Adapting to economic downturns requires a proactive and strategic approach. We focus on diversifying our customer base, enhancing our value offerings, and maintaining strict financial discipline to manage costs effectively. During such times, we also intensify our marketing efforts to highlight the unique aspects of our hotels, attracting a broader range of guests and securing repeat business. How do you ensure the financial health of your business? Ensuring the financial health of our business involves rigorous financial planning, regular audits, and continuous monitoring of our revenue streams and expenditures. We also maintain strong relationships with our lenders and financial partners, which helps in managing cash flows and securing funding for growth initiatives. Prudent financial management is essential for sustaining operations and supporting expansion. What personal goals do you still aim to achieve? Personally, I aim to further the legacy I've built by ensuring that my business continues to thrive and adapt to future challenges. I look forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing philanthropic interests, particularly in education and community development. My goal is to give back to the community that has supported my journey and to help others achieve their dreams just as I have pursued mine.
