Margate Mayor Michael Colling reads a proclamation June 20 honoring longtime fireworks supporter Margaret Reale. By NANETTE LoBIONDO GALLOWAY MARGATE – The mayor and commissioners Thursday, June 20 honored a longtime advocate and fundraiser declaring Margaret Reale Day in the City of Margate. Mayor Michael Collins read the proclamation honoring Reale, who for 20 years has raised the money to put on the city’s 4th of July fireworks display on the beach. Reale was president of the Margate Mothers Association in 2003 when she asked the city to bring back fireworks to Huntington Avenue beach. The governing body agreed it would be a good idea to hold the celebration if she could raise the funds needed to put on the display. She was successful in raising the funding needed, worked with the Public Works, Police and Fire departments to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, and the 2004 Independence Day fireworks display went on without a hitch. Spectators have flocked to the beach every year since then to watch the celebration of life in America. With funding raised by the Margate Mothers Association, the city continues to support Reale’s lasting legacy. The proclamation presented by the mayor and Board of Commissioners thanked Reale for her commitment to serving the city and proclaimed June 20 as Margie Reale Day in Margate.
