Young women are looking forward to Project Prom weekend, March 9-11

  • Atlantic County

It's Project Prom weekend in Atlantic County.

NORTHFIELD Young women hoping to look fabulous on prom night are welcome to pick out a free prom dress during Project Prom weekend, March 9-11 at Kensington Furniture Store, 200 Tilton Road.

More than 2,000 prom dresses that were only worn once will be available for free at the annual Project Prom pop-up shop. Eighth graders, high school teens and those who are competing in area pageants may attend.

It is the 10th annual Project Prom event, which benfits local girls facing financial constraints by providing them with complimentary prom dresses, jewelry, shoes and accessories.

Project Prom Co-founder and Chairwoman Rene Kane said the program, which has been made possible with the support of the community and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City, has been a beacon of hope for many Atlantic County teens over the last decade.

She founded the organization after she saw a Facebook post asking for a prom dress for the poster's daughter. That's when she realized her daughter's expensive prom dresses were just sitting in a closet. Kane started a collection drive at several locations and the first Project Prom giveaway was held in 2014.

The event features music and entertainment. Young women can try on dresses in 12 personalized fitting rooms set up at Kensington. Shopping hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10; and 2-5 p.m. Monday, March 11.
