VENTNOR The city's Police Department is part of an elite group of New Jersey law enforcement agencies.
On Thursday, March 28, the Board of Commissioners learned that Ventnor PD is one of the few law enforcement agencies to receive accreditation from the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police five times.
According to Accreditation Program Director Harry J. Delgado, who presented a Certificate of Re-accreditation to Police Chief Joe Fussner, only 3% of agencies that apply are awarded re-accreditation for a fifth time.
The designation, which is awarded after an intensive review of police policies, procedures, management, operations and support services has been awarded for a second time to only 32% of agencies in the state. Eight percent received it four times, and Ventnor received it five times. An on-site assessment was conducted on Feb. 21 and the public was invited to provide commentary about police operations.
Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, reduced risk and liability exposure, stronger defense against civil lawsuits, increased community advocacy, and more confidence in the agency's ability to operate efficiently and respond to community needs, Fussner said in February.
Accreditation status is valid for a three-year period during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting to its continued compliance with the standards under which it was initially accredited.
Delgado said Ventnor PD over the years has demonstrated commitment and consistency in following best practices that enhance professionalism and transparency.
Ventnor exceeds accepted practices and adheres to the highest standards, he said reading from a prepared statement.
Residents can be assured that the department operates with a high level of confidence, leadership and professionalism, and is among an exclusive group of law enforcement agencies in the state, Delgado said.
