LONGPORT There will be some personnel changes on the Longport Board of Commissioners in 2025, after voters in this year's General Election have their say.
According to City Clerk Monica A. Kyle, the deadline to file nominating petitions to run for Borough Commissioner is 4 p.m. Aug. 22. Candidates are already lining up to run for a seat on the three-member board, but none have filed petitions at this time.
After 16 years on the board, Mayor Nicholas Russo, the third longest-serving mayor of Longport, said he is not running for re-election to a fifth term and would endorse a slate of candidates at the appropriate time.
I'm confident the candidates will continue to hold down the tax rate, protect infrastructure and continue the high standards of quality of life issues that Longport residents and visitors expect, he said.
Commissioner Jim Leeds is also calling it quits after serving four, four-year terms, he said.
After 16 years on the commission, I'm stepping down at the end of my term, he said. I enjoy doing it but it's time to step down and let new people come in.
Leeds said he has also served on planning and zoning boards both in Longport and in Pennsylvania for more than 60 years.
However, Commissioner Dan Lawler said his name will be on the ballot this November and he has already recruited other candidates to run with him, he said.
Lawler, who has chaired every department of the board during his 16-year tenure Revenue and Finance, Public Works and currently Public Safety said his slate of candidates will be a strong one.
His running mates will be Patrick K. Armstrong, who is Deputy Fire Chief in Margate, and resident James Ulmer, who ran unsuccessfully in the last Board of Commissioners election. They are seeking Russo and Leeds' endorsements, Lawler said.
Other candidates have yet to step forward to challenge them.
Anyone interested in running in the non-partisan election being held Nov. 5, may obtain nominating petitions from the Borough Clerk's Office at Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave. The office is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to state law, petitions must be returned no later than 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.

Ventnor voters will go to the polls to elect their commissioners on May 14. The Imagine Ventnor slate of Maria Mento, Tim Kriebel and Lance Landgraf are running unopposed. The early voting period starts May 10.
There is no Board of Commissioners election in Margate this year.
