Herb Stern Longport Scholarship Fund announces this year’s winners

Herb Stern Longport Scholarship recipients for 2023. LONGPORT – The Herb Stern Longport Scholarship Fund has announced the winners of this year’s scholarship awards. The 15 winners who are graduating from high school and planning to attend college in the fall and those already attending college or are in graduate school will receive a total of $26,250. Awards will be presented during the Longport Commission meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 19. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The 2024 recipients are:
  • Jackson Agnellini who plans to attend Virginia Tech studying finance. He has worked as a lifeguard and volunteered at Shore Medical Center.
  • Pacifico Agnellini who is enrolled at the University of South Carolina studying finance and real estate. He worked as a lifeguard and volunteered to support cancer research.
  • Eva Engel, a fine arts and graphic design student at the University of Tampa. She has worked at area restaurants and as a nanny.  She has volunteered at Jefferson Hospital and several Philadelphia area art programs and museums.
  • Raquel Gresham, who is pursuing a career as a Certified Nurse Midwife at Thomas Jefferson University. She has worked as a nurse in area hospitals and volunteered at Shore Medical Center.
  • Jonah Hammerstedt, a med student at the Medical College at Jefferson University.  He has volunteered as an EMT and at the FoodBank and worked as a dock manager and as a chef.
  • Tyler Lawler, a student at University of South Carolina studying business and finance. He has worked at restaurants and surf shops and has volunteered at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and for beach cleanups.
  • Alessandra Lucasti, who plans to attend the College of Charleston. She wants to become a plastic surgeon. She has volunteered to provide food for the homeless, give clothing and toys to children, and has worked as a restaurant hostess.
  • Sophia Mammucari, who is headed to Harvard University to pursue a master’s degree in social work to address educational inequalities. She has interned at the Boys and Girl Club and worked as a desk clerk and cashier.
  • Jake Meli, who will attend Villanova University to study finance and computer science. He worked as a lifeguard and in restaurants, was an altar server, and was on rowing and swim teams.
  • Jack Schiavo, who will study physics and business at St. Joseph's University.  He worked as a pickleball court attendant and volunteered as a swim and soccer coach.
  • Birdie Stewart, a student the College of Charleston studying finance and computer science. She worked as a restaurant hostess and volunteered as a track coach.
  • Kallan Tripician, who is studying at Wesleyan University with an emphasis on medical, software and environmental subjects.  She has worked at the Longport Library and Historical Museum and volunteered as a gym coach and at the Margate Performing Art Center.
  • Macey Valtri, who is headed to Lynn University to pursue degrees in business and environmental studies. She worked as a sports court attendant and volunteered as a publisher for charities.
  • Madison Valtri, who is undecided on her major but will go to Lynn University in the fall. She has worked as an office assistant and did charity work in baking and sales.
  • Nicholas Volpe, a student a the University of South Carolina who is studying to become a physician. He has done restaurant work and has volunteered at the Cape May Regional Medical Center and other health organizations.
Now in its 13th year, the fund has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships, all funded by contributions from Longport’s year-round and seasonal residents. The board of the fund includes President Herb Stern, Vice-president Patrick Armstrong, Treasurer Lynn Baumgardner, Secretary Bob Stern, and members Scott Stetzer and Jennifer Wong.
