Miss America has a 100-year history of looking ahead. The competition’s inception as a “bathing beauty review” was an act of rebellion during a time when women weren’t permitted to wear swimsuits in public. In 1945, the organization started awarding scholarships to the winner instead of prize money, making Miss America one of the first organizations in the United States to offer college scholarships to women. In the 1980s, Miss America Organization officially made community service a pillar of the program, helping to raise awareness and millions of dollars for worthy causes. Today, Miss America candidates are neurosurgeons, social activists, fighter pilots, investigative journalists and expert coders. They are smart, principled and beautiful in the way they lead and make an impact. Miss New Jersey is representative of the mission of the Miss New Jersey Education Foundation program and works to advance the goals and objectives of the foundation.
