  • Public Safety

LONGPORT – Police Lieutenants Ray Burgan and Nicholas Rettino Nov. 1 successfully completed the FBI LEEDA Trilogy series, earning the esteemed Trilogy Award.

The FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award recognizes law enforcement professionals who have successfully completed three rigorous programs designed to enhance leadership skills and prepare them for the challenges of modern law enforcement.

The FBI LEEDA Trilogy programs include:

  • Supervisor Leadership Institute - A 4 1/2-day program aimed at first-line supervisors and middle managers, focusing on enhancing leadership competencies through personality diagnostics, case studies, and personal development.

  • Command Leadership Institute - A dynamic and challenging 4 1/2-day program preparing law enforcement leaders for command-level positions, emphasizing best practice strategies in credibility, discipline, and organizational problem-solving.

  • Executive Leadership Institute - Tailored for executive-level leaders, this program addresses emerging challenges facing these leaders and their organizations through interactive discussions and the sharing of personal experiences.

"Completing the FBI LEEDA Trilogy has been a transformative experience,” Burgan said. “The knowledge and skills we've gained will not only enhance our leadership within our agency but also improve our service to the community.”

Burgan said both officers are committed to using what they learned to make the department stronger.

Burgan and Rettino were promoted to the rank of lieutenant on Sept. 18. They are both graduates of Oakcrest High School and have experience and training while working in Longport.

Burgan, the department’s public information officer, started in Longport in 2012 and was promoted to sergeant in 2018. He is also a lieutenant in the Air National Guard. He has received numerous commendations and awards.

Rettino started his career as a Class 2 officer in Mullica Township and worked for the Stockton Police Department before joining the department in 2013. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2018.

Both officers have master’s degrees in police leadership and reside in Egg Harbor Township with their families.
