Festive Holiday Fun in New Jersey

The holidays are always so much fun in New Jersey! The weather is already getting colder and the days are flying past. Before you know it, you’ll be putting up Christmas lights, trimming the tree, and wrapping presents for your loved ones. All of the wholesome fun that can be had at home is wonderful, but what about when you need to get out of the house? New Jersey is full of fun festive events and activities that you can try — some kid-friendly and some adults-only — this holiday season to add a little extra cheer to your festive season.

An Underwater Christmas. Nov 24- Dec 24

Try something a little different this holiday season and treat yourself and your family to an underwater Christmas. While most Christmas events take place on dry land, you might get to watch Santa swim with sharks and turtles at Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey. Besides seeing the big man himself, you’ll also get to explore the aquarium, see over 15,000 aquatic animals, and enjoy the underwater decorations.

There's a whole lineup of holiday activities besides fish watching; try your hand at festive crafts, take in holiday-themed shows, and learn about ocean conservation at the same time.

Smithville Festival of Lights. 28 Nov-5 Jan

Nothing says “It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas” better than 100 Christmas trees floating on Lake Meone and 50,000 sparkling holiday lights! This annual spectacle is, in a word, dazzling. Light patterns are synced to holiday music and reflections dance across the freeing black water, creating a scene of festive warmth and happiness. Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you’ll be able to access 50 charming shops in historic Smithville as well as seven enticing eateries, carousels, train rides, and cozy lodging at the Colonial Inn.

Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar. Every Sun Dec 1-15

The Grand Arcade of the Asbury Park Convention Hall is home to this warmly lit and gorgeously decorated market every year in December. The historic charm of the venue adds to the warm and fuzzy feeling that the holidays create and it's well worth a visit.

Each stall at the bazaar is decorated with festive ornaments and twinkling lights, so it's a great place to spend a little time if you need a shot of holiday cheer. Shop for gifts and souvenirs, enjoy the warm drinks and fresh treats, and just enjoy the atmosphere that comes with the most wonderful time of year.

The German Christmas Market. December 6-8

Germany is famous for their Christmas markets, so you can be sure the German Christmas Market at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta will be a festive experience you’ll remember. This beloved annual event is a tradition for the people of Augusta and a great place to kill a few birds with one stone: spend time with loved ones, get into the spirit of the season, and shop for holiday gifts

There are hundreds of vendors at the event every year, selling unique gifts and crafts and a wide selection of enticing holiday snacks and treats to munch on or take home to eat by the fire. This market isn't just about shopping, though. Every year, the local schools each decorate and contribute a Christmas tree, so the event is a feast for the eyes as well as the soul and stomach. The market also supports several deserving local charities that are in need of contributions year-round.

The Clinton Christmas Parade. Dec 6

The 37th installment of this beloved event takes place in early December this year in Clinton. As one of the most anticipated holiday events in New Jersey, the parade offers holiday fun and excitement that kicks off the season with a selection of stunning holiday floats that will amaze visitors of all ages. Grab something to eat at a local restaurant, get a hot cocoa to go, and make your way to the parade route at least half an hour before 7 pm to find a spot with a good view.
