LONGPORT – The borough administration and the Police Department today learned of the passing of Administrator and former Police Chief A. Scott Porter.
“This is a very sad day for our agency,” Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Ray Burgan said. “He was more than a dedicated leader of an agency, he was a friend.”
Porter began his career in law enforcement in 1981 at Stockton University before joining the Longport Police Department in 1986, where he served the Longport community for more than two decades.
Rising through the ranks, Porter became the agency's police chief in 2001, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.
After he retired, Porter spent several years managing a cleaning business and three Wet Willie's daiquiri bars in Atlantic City. He also provided executive and crowd management services for a Philadelphia based security group.
His commitment to service was evident not only in his role as police chief, but also when he returned to the borough in September 2019 to serve as business administrator, continuing to lend his expertise and leadership to the community he loved, Burgan said.
“Scott Porter was more than just a leader; he was a mentor and a friend. His dedication to the Longport community and the officers of our department has left an indelible mark on all of us,” Police Chief Frank Culmone said in a release. “Personally, I have learned so much from him over the years, both as an officer and as a chief. His wisdom and guidance have shaped my approach to leadership, and I will forever be grateful for the influence he had on my life and career.”
“Chief Porter’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he served and in the continued commitment of the Longport Police Department to uphold the values he instilled in us,” Burgan said.
