Water 101: Learn about water from aquifer to tap at Sustainable Jersey event, Oct. 22

  • Health

There are few things as essential to life as water, but most of us don’t stop to appreciate the clean water that flows from our faucets; where it comes from, how we use it, and what happens after it goes down the drain.

The Atlantic-Cape May Sustainable Jersey Hub invites the public to learn more about the people, resources and infrastructure which provide and protect our water at an event being held 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Ocean City Community Center, 1735 Simpson Ave.

The event will feature presentations from local and regional professionals involved in protecting our water resources, the environment and public health.

“We’re really so fortunate not to have to think much about water,” Hub Co-chair Amy Menzel noted. “Globally, over 2 billion people live in water stressed countries and more than 25% of the global population lacks access to safe drinking water. And close to 4 billion people do not have safely managed sanitation services, according to the World Health Organization. Safe water is critical for human health, and its essential for us to all consider how precious this resource really is.”

In addition to providing information on the “Water 101” basics, presenters will also be sharing information on what local entities are doing to address emerging issues of concern such as PFAS, the “forever chemicals” and microplastics.

In our local communities, both private and public entities work to build and maintain water and wastewater systems. We often take this for granted until there’s a disruption or an emergency that impacts our service.

“People take note when they get their water or sewer bill, but many don’t really know much about what’s involved with providing clean drinking water or safely managing the dirty water after it leaves our homes,” Hub Co-chair Ralph Cooper added. “This Hub event brings experts from our region to share information and to answer questions about our water resources. The event will cover topics relevant to all of us, whether attendees live in coastal communities, rural or more densely populated areas in our region.”

The Hub event will also feature resource providers from a variety of local organizations working to protect waterways so participants can learn more about what they are doing and how you can get involved.

There is no cost to attend, but participants are encouraged to register in advance.
