VENTNOR – Mayor and Commissioner of Public Safety Tim Kriebel Thursday, Sept. 12 promoted two members of the Police Department and swore-in a new member as police chaplain.
Lindsay O’Connell was promoted to the rank of sergeant on National Police Woman Day and is the first woman to hold a leadership position in the department.
Police Chief Joe Fussner said O’Connell is highly qualified to hold the leadership position.
Although there were other women in the department who were also qualified to be promoted to leadership positions, unfortunately, they never had the opportunity to serve. Several women were qualified but either left the department for other jobs or retired from police service before they could be promoted, he said.
O’Connell is a graduate of Stockton University and has worked in the department since 2018, serving as field training officer and crisis negotiator.
Mark Suprun was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Also a graduate of Stockton University, he was hired in 2010, promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2021, and served on the County Emergency Response Team over the last eight years. He is commander of the field training division.
Additionally, the mayor swore-in Police Chaplain Lou Strugala, the founding pastor of Church by the Bay in Galloway Township. Strugala was also recently named chaplain in the Longport Police Department. He also serves as chaplain for the New Jersey State Police and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. His nondenominational approach to counseling provides support to law enforcement officers who are regularly exposed to traumatic incidents and stressful situations, Fussner said.
