Surfers can recycle their worn-out wetsuits

  • Community

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County is conducting a neoprene wetsuit recycling program through Nov. 1.

Quality, usage and care can determine the lifespan of a wetsuit and its ability to function as designed, most like three-five years. Some surfers replace their wetsuits every years. According to Rutgers County Agent Steve Yereau, about 250 tons of neoprene wetsuits wind up in landfills every year. The cooperative extension is partnering with Lava Rubber to recycle them into new products, such as laptop cases, koozies, yoga mats and slippers.

You can drop off your old wetsuits at the Rutgers NJ Agricultural Experiment Station located at 1623 Whitesville Road in Toms River until Nov. 1.
