Seniors learn about their Jewish farming roots in Atlantic County

  • Community

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Residents at Seashore Gardens Living Center recently took a meaningful journey into the past during an engaging seminar led by historian and educator Josh Cutler. The presentation, titled, "Exploring Our Roots: Early Jewish Farming Communities of South Jersey," offered a fascinating look at the region’s rich Jewish agricultural history.

Through compelling storytelling and historical insights, Cutler shed light on the legacy of Jewish immigrants who established farming colonies across South Jersey. These early settlers not only cultivated the land, but also built close-knit, faith-driven communities grounded in resilience, tradition, and mutual support.

Cutler serves as the executive director of the Board of Jewish Education and is the author of the upcoming book, "The 70 Shuls of South Jersey," which chronicles Jewish houses of worship in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.

He will be returning to Seashore Gardens Living Center Monday, May 12 to present “The Lost Synagogues of Atlantic City," which explores the once thriving Jewish community of Absecon Island, where over two dozen synagogues stood over the past century. While a few have endured, many were short lived, serving niche Jewish communities before fading into obscurity. These forgotten synagogues represent a unique and overlooked chapter in Atlantic City's history. This program will highlight seven shuls that time has erased, offering a glimpse into a lost world.

Mosaic partners with long-term care communities such as Seashore Gardens Living Center to provide programs that foster engagement, connection, and well-being for older adults.
