VECC braves the shave for pediatric cancer

  • Community

The Ventnor Educational Community Complex held its 15th annual “Brave the Shave” event Thursday, April 17 in the school gym.

Students raised approximately $8,400 to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer research foundation, said fifth grade teacher Jim Henry, who has organized the event for the last three years.

Henry and 10 students had their heads shaved for the cause. Tyler Brogan was the student who raised the most – an impressvie $859.

With buzzers in hand, Michael Costello and his crew from Gas Up Barbershop & Shave Co. of Somers Point donated their time and services for the cause.

The day before spring break was filled with fun events thanks to physical education teachers Lauri Baldi, Luke Duff, Aimee Scotty and Corey Smith. There were student dodgeball games, teachers versus students basketball games, both boys and girls this year, and tug-of-war for the younger students.

Henry expressed gratitude for those who assist behind the scenes, including his wife, seventh grade teacher Lori Henry. He also thanked all the donors, fundraisers and volunteers who ensured a fun day for the students.
