Registrations open for Longport's annual 'Doc' Turner swim

  • Community

LONGPORT – The Beach Patrol will hold its annual Capt. Turner Swim 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 on the 33rd Avenue beach. The swim honors Capt. Turner and Doug “Doc” Farrell.

Turner was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1920-1934 and later became the first chief of the Longport Beach Patrol. He was the sole survivor of the valiant rescue of the sloop, Anna, which claimed the lives of five Coast Guardsmen.

Farrell, a retired podiatrist and children’s book author who died from multiple myeloma in 2023, helped the Beach Patrol organize the annual swim, which raised thousands of dollars for cancer charities.

The half-mile swim will follow the current and the Longport Beach Patrol will provide water safety.

There is no signup fee, but donations can be made out to the Longport Lifeguard Association.

The first 40 swimmers to donate on the day of the race will receive a Doc Turner swim cap.

Check-in will be held 3:30 p.m. outside Beach Patrol Headquarters on 33rd and Atlantic avenues.

To register, call 609 822 3898.
