VENTNOR - The World Animal Protection organization is partnering with local sand sculptors John and Laury Gowdy to create a sculpture honoring World Elephant Day, Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The sand sculpture will be built on the beach at S. Cambridge Avenue next to the Ventnor Fishing Pier to honor Joyce the Elephant, who was rescued from slaughter in 1984 in Zimbabwe and now lives at Six Flags Great Adventure park in Jackson.
World Animal Protection has mounted a campaign to shut down the elephant exhibit at Six Flags and have Joyce and four other elephants released to a sanctuary.
The Gowdys will start building the sand sculpture at 7 a.m.
