MARGATE - The fastest in the floating flock of thousands of rubber ducks will be crowned champion at fourth annual Margate Duck Derby, Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Municipal Pier, Amherst and Washington avenues. The Margate Business Association will host the event from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Visa gift cards will be awarded to the top three finishing ducks.
Scott’s Dock is hosting the floating quack-a-palooza and while the speeds are slow, the competition is fierce.
Raffle tickets are $5 and contain a corresponding number on a weighted, rubber duck. The ducks are released into the bay en masse on a closed course, and with a little help from the current and a bay breeze, ducks cruise towards a funneled finish line to separate the top three finishers from the rest of the flock. Duck owners have no interaction with their rubber racers, but they can cheer and watch the race from the Municipal Pier on race day. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. with the derby beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. The event includes fun activities for children, a DJ and more.
To participate in the fowl flotilla, adults 21 and older can purchase their raffle tickets at Thrilling Thursdays Movies on the Beach, Margate Community Farmers Market on Thursday mornings at Steve and Cookie’s By The Bay, or at Margate Gardens, 9710 Ventnor Ave. Margate.
Ticket sales will end on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. and will not be available on the day of the event.
