Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering to discuss the award-winning novel, “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride. This 1920s and 1940s story, set in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, showcases a vibrant community where Jewish and African American neighbors lived side by side sharing ambitions, despite facing personal struggles and systemic prejudice. Memoir Workshop, Friday, Sept. 5, 10:30 a.m. to noon
Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing Harriet Levin Millan. Downton Abbey & the British Manor Home: Part 1, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 10:30 a.m. to noon
Join author and retired Professor Ellen Hernandez on the week of the wildly anticipated opening of the historical drama, “Downton Abbey, The Grand Finale.” In Part 1, Hernandez will take attendees on a journey to explore the history of British nobility and how the Jewish population fit into it, as well as the British manorial system through the Gilded Age, Edwardian Era, and World War I. With a doctorate in history from Lehigh University, Dr. Calvin Tesler is an adjunct professor at Stockton University specializing in Holocaust history, American urban and colonial history, and Native American studies. Stress Test: Global Religious Repercussions of War, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 6 p.m.
The Sara & Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center will host a lecture with Dr. Carol Rittner to discuss her new book, “Stress Test: The Israel-Hamas War and Christian-Jewish Relations,” which encompasses 12 world renown American Christian scholars and teachers as they explore how the ongoing conflict has strained Christian-Jewish relations.
