The Kuehns, once a promi-nent Berlin fam¬i¬ly, embraced Nazism to escape hard times. When their daughter, Ruth, had an affair with Joseph Goebbels, he discovered she was half Jew¬ish. Instead of executing her, Goebbels sent the Kuehn fam¬i¬ly to Hawaii to spy for the Axis powers. There, Ruth and her par¬ents built a covert oper¬a¬tion, relay¬ing secrets that helped enable the Pearl Har¬bor attack. Jump¬ing back and forth from Chris¬tine dis¬cov¬er¬ing her family’s secret, to the untold past of spies in Ger¬many, Japan and Hawaii, Fam¬i¬ly of Spies is fast-paced his¬to¬ry at its finest and will rewrite the nar¬ra¬tive of Dec. 7, 1941. Book Club Brunch with Meryl Rodgers, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 10:30 a.m. to noon
Join local educator Meryl Rodgers as we examine the book, “All Who Go Do Not Return,” which focuses on the life of author Shulem Deen, who was raised as a member of the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the United States. Deen knows little about the outside world, only that it is to be shunned. After an arranged marriage at 18 years of age, several children soon followed. While his first transgression of turning on the radio is small, his curiosity leads him to the library and internet. Soon he begins a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs, until several years later, his faith unravels entirely. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate. RSVP by Dec. 11.
