Saving Abigail with Author Liz Hirsh Naftali, Thursday, Jan. 15, 6-8 p.m.
Join an educational program designed to build bridges, strengthen community, and explore the power of learning from one another. Liz Hirsh Naftali will recount the story of her great niece, 3-year-old Abigail Mor Edan, taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, when terrorists breached Israel boarders and security, murdered 1,200 people, and took more than 245 innocent lives into Gaza. With no prior experience or roadmap for rescuing a hostage, Naftali began an international effort to share her niece’s face and story with the U.S. government, bipartisan congressional leaders, and world officials. Though not a diplomat, politician, or military expert, Naftali was determined to free Abigail from the nightmare. Dig into the roots of Jewish history in Vineland, a farming community nestled right in the heart of the Garden State. Holocaust Remembrance: Rebuilt from Broken Glass, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2 p.m.
As a young boy growing up in Halberstadt, Germany, Fred Behrend saw firsthand the destruction of Jewish life during the Kristallnacht pogrom. His family’s home was invaded, the synagogue burned, and Jewish men in the community were beaten and arrested. This night marked the moment his parents realized they had to flee Germany, setting the course for the family’s long journey through Luxembourg, Belgium, Cuba, and later the U.S. Join a special viewing of the documentary, “Rebuilt from Broken Glass: A German Jewish Life Remade in America,” followed by a Q&A session with Behrend and filmmaker Larry Hanover. This program is in collaboration with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center, Stockton Holocaust Resource Center, Board of Jewish Education, Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, and JFS’ Lynn Kramer Village by the Shore. Brunch & Learn: The Jews of Sarajevo, Life in a Post Srebrenica World, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 10:30 a.m. to noon
Explore how Jewish communities in the region navigated memory, identity, and resilience after the traumas of the 1990s. We will examine the role of remembrance in shaping contemporary Jewish life alongside broader Balkan societies still grappling with the legacy of war and genocide. This program will take place at Shirat Hayam, 700 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor. RSVP by Jan. 26.
