Shelter in place delayed Ventnor school dismissal about an hour

  • Public Safety

The Ventnor Community School was put on a shelter in place Monday afternoon due to a resident's mental health issue.

Police were called to the home across the street from the educational complex on Lafayette Avenue at about 2:40 p.m. for a man having a mental health crisis, Chief Joe Fussner said.

When it was learned the man may have a firearm, the school across the street was put on shelter in place as a precaution.

Police negotiators were able to get in communication with the man by phone, and he eventually came out on his own, Fussner said. He was taken to a medical facility for evaluation.

The man, whose name was not released, was not armed, but police still were investigating whether there was a firearm in the home, the chief said.

"I went into the school and met with school administration and staff, and we came up with plan for dismissal," Fussner said.

The normal 3:15 p.m. dismissal was delayed about an hour.

Fussner said the bus company was "very accommodating," even sending extra buses, since normally the buses loop back for afterschool and after-care.

"Everything went pretty smoothly considering the circumstances," he said.
