What’s that you say? Polistina bill expands access to hearing aids.

  • State of NJ

TRENTON - The New Jersey Senate today unanimously passed bipartisan legislation sponsored by Sen. Vince Polistina (R-2) that would expand access to hearing aids.

The bill, S-2874, seeks to grant licensed audiologists with the authority to prescribe and order hearing aids under certain conditions. This legislation is in response to updated regulations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“This bill is a common-sense update to ensure that audiologists can provide more comprehensive care for individuals with hearing loss,” Polistina said in a statement. “As the FDA modernizes hearing aid regulations, it’s crucial that our state’s healthcare professionals have the authority to keep up. This legislation will ultimately streamline access to hearing aids and improve the quality of care for New Jersey residents.”

Currently, licensed audiologists are permitted to dispense and fit hearing aids if they have completed an accredited program. S-2874 would amend state law to allow audiologists who have completed the necessary coursework to also select, prescribe, and order hearing aids.

The full bill is available online and now heads to NJ Gov. Phil Murphy’s desk for his signature.
