Longport resident’s teen dance proposal now in ‘limbo’

  • Community

LONGPORT – A resident’s proposal to hold a teen dance on the tennis courts at the 33rd Avenue recreation complex has evolved into a limbo contest at the bayfront parking lot behind Borough Hall.

Resident Michael Bell, who several weeks ago proposed holding a teen dance at the borough’s recreational complex, said Wednesday that as a salesman, he doesn’t usually take no for an answer. Instead, he has revised his plan, adjusting the timeframe to coincide with the borough’s 10 p.m. curfew law, and after speaking to another local resident, changed the location to the parking lot behind Borough Hall, where other special events have been held.

Calling it “Longport Lollapalooza,” Bell said he plans to hold a limbo contest for teens ages 13-18, provide music they can dance to, and even a photo booth with tropical backgrounds where they can take pictures using their cell phones, he said.

Bell said he is most concerned for the safety of children and has been in touch with Margate Mayor Michael Collins, whom he said supports the program, and will enlist the help of several adult residents to serve as chaperones.

Commissioners said they had “no problem” with the proposal and instructed Bell to contact the borough’s Recreation Supervisor to work out all the details.

In other business, the Board of Commissioners awarded a license to Sea La Vie Coffee to sell iced coffee at a location outside the beachfront Community Building weekends starting July 19. Sea La Vie won the bid offering and will pay Longport $1,000 for the exclusive right to sell coffee to beachgoers.

The board also appointed Frank Sarno to serve as Fire Sub-code Official starting July 16 at a rate to be negotiated by Borough Administrator Patrick Dellane.

It also appointed Ed Dennis Jr. of Remington & Vernick Engineers to provide engineering services for Phase I of the Lead Service Line Replacement Program, with fees not to exceed $130,000.

Dennis said the borough would start with replacing lines along roadways that are undergoing construction, and that a public outreach campaign will include a website to inform residents about the project and how they can check to see if their service lines contain lead or galvanized steel pipes.

R&V was also contracted to engineer a wall barrier and site improvements to turn the end of Atlantic Avenue in the Longport Point area into a park setting where visitors can enjoy sunsets and the vista of Ocean City across the bay.

Additionally, the city approved a resolution to retain planning consultant Tiffany A. Cuviello to review the borough’s Master Plan Re-examination report. She will be paid $6,000 for the review.

The board also agreed to test the borough’s Early Warning System at noon on Saturdays over the coming weeks.
