The Longport Police Department announced this week that it would leverage modern technology to enhance public safety, improve emergency response and support the community by implementing the use of drone technology.
The department’s Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) program will assist during critical incidents, such as search and rescue operations, disaster response, crime scene documentation and other public safety emergencies. The program will allow police to respond more efficiently while improving safety for officers and the community, Lt. Ray Burgan said in a statement.
“We understand that public trust is essential, and we want to assure our residents that personal rights and privacy remain our highest priority,” he said in a Facebook post.
The use of UAS technology will be governed by strict policies and procedures that align with constitutional protections and respect for individual privacy. All deployments will be conducted in accordance with local, state and federal laws to ensure that this program is utilized responsibly and ethically.
“Our goal is to enhance community safety while maintaining transparency and accountability,” said Burgan, who has been designated to supervise the program.
