It's been a long time coming, but you can finally watch Phillies, Sixers and Flyers games broadcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia without having a cable or any sort of bundle subscription.
It was announced Monday that those who are "located in NBC Sports Philadelphia's television territory" can purchase an add-on in the streaming service Peacock that would allow them to watch coverage of Phillies, Sixers and Flyers game on the network:
"The price for the add-on subscription for NBC Sports Philadelphia is $24.95/mo. Users with a direct-billed Peacock Premium ($7.99/mo.) or Premium Plus ($13.99/mo.) Plan can purchase an add-on subscription. To learn more and to subscribe, users can visit NBC Sports Philadelphia."
The add-on will enable users to watch more than just the in-game coverage that the network provides:
"NBC Sports Philadelphia’s live Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia 76ers, and Philadelphia Flyers games, which are surrounded by comprehensive pregame and postgame coverage, and extensive Philadelphia Eagles (NFL) programming, highlighted by live gameday and daily in-season shows. NBC Sports Philadelphia also provides sports news, analysis and commentary programming, such as ‘SportsNet Central,’ and live coverage of other teams, including college basketball and football."
It's a fairly monumental day for cordcutters. While $24.95 per month may seem like a decent chunk of change on top of already paying for Peacock, it's still significantly less than most cable or bundling plans. If you're someone who only pays for a cable bundle to be able to watch the Phillies, Sixers and Flyers, pivoting to the Peacock add-on would likely save you quite a bit of money.
While the best-case scenario for the consumer would be to be able to just be able to pay by game, those who are major fans of just one of the team can theoretically cancel the add-on when their favorite team isn't in season. For example, if you only want the subscription to watch the Sixers, you can cancel your subscription in the summer and resubscribe in the fall. (You could probably cancel it now and not miss much, but that's another story.)
