How does a game of online Blackjack work? Our simple guide

Online Blackjack is among the casino games that made the leap to digital formats whilst keeping – if not increasing – their widespread popularity. The online version follows the same fundamental rules as its land-based counterpart, but with some added features and innovative mechanics that come with digital gameplay.

So, if you’re looking to refine your online Blackjack knowledge, you’ll certainly want to understand how a typical round unfolds. This can help you make informed decisions when it’s next time to hit, stand, or double down in a game of Blackjack online.

The basics of online Blackjack

An online game of Blackjack has the same core aim as a land-based table game – you’re playing against a dealer to try and get as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. The main difference is that online Blackjack involves a virtual dealer that is the software itself.

The game begins with you placing your bet, after which two cards are dealt to both you and the dealer. Your cards are placed face up, while the dealer has one card face-up (the “upcard”) and the other face-down (the “hole card”).

In terms of card values:

  • Cards two to 10 are worth their face value
  • Face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) are worth 10
  • Ace can be worth either one or 11, depending on which value you think has the potential to benefit your hand more

Your options during a round

Once your initial cards are dealt, and you’ve counted the total value of your hand, you must decide on your next move:

  • Hit – If you choose to hit, you receive another card to try and improve your total. If your hand value exceeds 21, you go “bust”.
  • Stand – If you are satisfied with your hand total, you can stand and keep your current cards as they are.
  • Double down – This allows you to double your original bet in exchange for receiving just one additional card. This option is often used when you have a strong starting hand.
  • Split – If your first two cards are of the same valuer (such as two eights), you may split them into two separate hands and place an additional bet equal to your original stake. Each hand is then played individually.
  • Surrender – Some versions of online Blackjack allow you to surrender, forfeiting half of your bet in exchange for ending the round early.

The dealer’s turn

Once you’ve completed your actions, the dealer will reveal their hole card. The dealer must then follow set rules:

  • They must hit until they reach at least 17.
  • If the dealer busts, the round ends automatically.
  • If they stand, your hand is compared to theirs to determine the outcome.

Payouts

  • If your hand is higher than the dealer’s without exceeding 21, you receive a 1:1 payout.
  • If you hit 21 with your first two cards (which means having an Ace and a 10-value card), this is called Blackjack, and it typically pays out 3:2.
  • If your hand and the dealer’s hand are the same value, it is a push, and your original bet is returned.

Online Blackjack follows a straightforward structure, very similar to the original table game. Whether you choose to hit, stand, or double down, knowing the basic rules can help you approach the game responsibly and more informed.
