'Mitzvah Stitchers' provide comfort and support during trying times

  • Community

MARGATE - The Mitzvah Stitchers, a community-driven crochet club dedicated to providing comfort through handmade blankets, will host an Open House 1-4 P.M. Tuesday, May 6 in the auditorium at the Marjorie & Lewis Katz JCC, 501 N. Jerome Ave.  The free event is open to the public, and all skill levels are welcome.

Since its inception in September 2023, the Mitzvah Stitchers have created more than 100 blankets for patients in need. The group donates to the Oncology Unit at Shore Memorial Hospital and the Neonatal Pediatric Unit at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees. Their mission is to provide warmth and support during medical treatments while reminding recipients that they are cared for by the community.

In addition to standard baby blankets, the group also creates special rainbow blankets for “rainbow babies” — infants born to families after the loss of a child. These blankets serve as a symbol of hope and healing, much like a rainbow following a storm.

The club welcomes both beginners and experienced crocheters, offering a creative and therapeutic outlet while fostering a sense of community. Research published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association has shown that crocheting can promote relaxation, reduce stress and improve cognitive function. The repetitive motions involved can help strengthen hand muscles, enhance dexterity and provide mindfulness benefits.

Looking ahead, the Mitzvah Stitchers aim to expand their outreach by engaging young people and individuals with special needs in community service. Future initiatives will focus on teaching crochet as both a creative and therapeutic practice while encouraging social engagement and community contribution.

Refreshments will be served. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the group’s mission, meet members and participate in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
