  • Community

All three Downbeach towns will hold Memorial Day commemoration ceremonies Monday, May 25 to honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

VENTNOR

Ventnor will pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the USA. Join the Greater Absecon Island VFW for a solemn ceremony at 9 a.m. around the flagpole at City Hall, 6201 Ventnor Ave.

MARGATE

The City of Margate and the Margate Mother's Association invites residents and visitors to honor and remember the nation’s fallen heroes by attending the Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.

The Memorial Day Parade will begin with a lineup at 9:30 a.m. at Margate Municipal Building (formerly Union Avenue School). The parade steps-off at 10 a.m., and marches down the Parkway to the All Wars Memorial at Ventnor and Mansfield avenues, where a ceremony will be held.

All are welcome to decorate bicycles, baby strollers or golf carts. Uniformed youth groups, such as baseball and lacrosse teams, are especially encouraged to march and show their support.

Following the ceremony, the Margate Log Cabin welcomes all for refreshments and community.

LONGPORT

American Legion Post 469 of Longport will host its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony starting at 11 a.m.

The parade will start at 33rd and Atlantic avenues, turn down 35th Avenue to Ventnor Avenue, and then along Ventnor Avenue to Thomas B. Reed Park at the foot of the Longport bridge.

The military guest of honor and keynote speaker is last year’s Wounded Warrior Week recipient, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Roger Hopkins.  He will be riding with his wife Betsy and his service dog Hoku.

Residents who want to participate in the parade should arrive at 33rd and Atlantic avenues by 10:45 a.m. and take a position behind the lifeguard boat.

The ceremony will be held immediately following the parade.

A traditional “hot dog picnic” will be held following the ceremony in the park behind Borough Hall.
