Community-wide cemetery cleanup honors the past with an eye to the future

  • Community

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The larger Jewish community is invited to honor the past and care for the future – one sacred space at a time by participating in a meaning mitzvah. A Cemetery Cleanup Day will be held in two shifts, 10:30 a.m. to noon and 12-1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 at Beth Israel Cemetery, 6804 Black Horse Pike, across from Walmart.

The event marks the first in a new series of community cleanup days dedicated to preserving and maintaining local Jewish cemeteries. By caring for these resting places, participants will fulfill the sacred Jewish value of Kavod HaMet, which is showing dignity and respect to those who came before us.

All are welcome to share in this meaningful mitzvah of remembrance and restoration during morning and afternoon shifts. Volunteers will rake leaves, clear debris, remove overgrowth and gently clean headstones and crypts. The atmosphere will be one of reverence, teamwork and community spirit.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the Jewish leaders, rabbis and Holocaust survivors buried in the cemetery at designated learning stations.

All supplies, including gloves, bags, sponges, water and snacks, will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring additional rakes or hedge clippers if they have them.

An RSVP is required to participate. To sign up for a shift, please contact Josh Cutler at the Board of Jewish Education by calling 609-822-4404, ext. 124 or emailing [email protected].
