LONGPORT – The borough will begin construction of Longport Point Park on Dec. 1.
It will be the second public park to be constructed this year. The Dorothy McGee Park was dedicated in July, and Point Park will be dedicated before the start of the 2026 beach season. By this time next year, the borough will likely have a third new park which is planned for Beach Terrace along the bulkhead between 15th and 16th avenues. That park is being built with the assistance of Beach Terrace Park, Inc., a non-profit organized to raise the money needed to create the park.
Beginning, Dec. 1, Avenue will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic leading to the 11th Avenue turnaround to accommodate construction of the park. Construction will last approximately 90 days. Residents and visitors are asked to follow all posted signage, fencing and barriers, which are in place to protect the safety of residents, pedestrians and construction workers. Parking and the fishing area will not be accessible during construction.
The Board of Commissioners Oct. 15 awarded a $505,800 contract to L. Feriozzi Concrete Co. of Atlantic City to build a retaining wall along the bayside at the end of Atlantic Avenue where people enjoy views of the bay, ocean and the northern end of Ocean City.
The project is being funded through donations, a $71,000 NJ Local Recreation Grant and a prior recreation bond issue.
The Longport Police Department announced that it is partnering with borough officials, engineers, and contractors to ensure all safety and containment protocols are followed. Officers will monitor the work zone, oversee compliance with approved construction times, and help manage any traffic or public safety issues that arise during the project.
“We appreciate the cooperation of everyone involved for their coordination and shared commitment to safety and quality work,” police said in a Facebook post.
Residents and visitors are asked to plan ahead, avoid the construction zone, and use alternate routes until the project is completed.
