Throwback Thursday: Jewish-Owned Businesses of Historic Atlantic City – Part 1, Thursday, Nov. 20, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Atlantic City’s Jewish community shaped the resort’s reputation through its many businesses. In the 1880s, Jewish entrepreneurs opened rooming houses, hotels, grocery stores, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, theaters, and clubs for locals and tourists. Thriving along the avenues and Boardwalk, they offered everything from souvenirs to fine dining. By mid-century, hundreds of hotels welcomed summer visitors, while Jewish-owned shops built a strong commercial presence. Though much of the community later moved to Ventnor, Margate, and Longport, the legacy of Jewish businesses remains central to Atlantic City’s history. Attend in-person at Shirat Hayam, 700 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor. RSVP by Nov. 17.
