The Marjorie and Lewis Katz JCC’s Learn, Move, Create program is offering a fall nature series being held in various Atlantic County locations. The program “Noticing Nature: A Season of Change” is being facilitated by Sue Slatterback of 2nd Nature Connections.
Nine sessions will be held 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday mornings, Sept. 9 through Nov. 18. Weekly sessions will focus on natural history topics at locations from the mouth of the Great Egg Harbor River to Penny Pot Park in the western section of Atlantic County. Excursions are outdoors and offer authentic nature experiences.
Sept. 9 – Nature journaling with Natural Materials
This program is the backbone of the series. Meet at Oyster Creek Inn in Galloway Township.
Sept. 16 – Phenology
Notice the changing seasons, and record phenomena in the nature journal. Meet in North Brigantine.
Sept. 30 – Nature’s Windows
Enjoy the windows of the world in panoramas, vistas, horizon and what’s above your head. Meets at Penny Pot Park in Folsom.
Oct. 14 – Mechanics of Migration
Learn how animals adapt and about strategies they use to weather the changing seasons, with focus on migration. Meet at the Great Egg Harbor Trailhead.
Oct. 21 – Monarch Butterflies on the Move
From backyard gardens to a 2,000-mile journey south. Find out why, includes a tagging demonstration. Meet at Glenn by the Bay in Galloway Township.
Oct. 28 – Language of the Land
Learn how wild landscapes nurture the nature within, using language, art, photography, poetry, prose and nature itself. Meet at Brigantine Beach South End.
Nov. 4 – Peak of Leaf Peeping
Enjoy the gorgeous colors of fall, study the nature of trees, such as leaf structure, trunk layers and how trees make up the eco-system. Meet at Camp Acagisca in the Weymouth section of Hamilton Township.
Nov. 11 – Staying Put as Winter Chills
Wildlife strategies to survive in winter. Look for evidence and methods for adapting to short days, long nights and winter’s chill. Meet at the Egg Harbor Township Nature Area.
Nov. 18 – Return of Waterfowl
After a summer in the north, ducks and other waterfowl return to our local wildlife refuges. Meet at the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway Township.
The JCC Learn, Move, Create program is free and open to Atlantic County residents age 60 and over. The program is funded in part by a grant from Atlantic County Intergenerational Services.
