Stockton gets 'Lost in Pink' to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

  • Health

ATLANTIC CITY - Stockton University Atlantic City will host “Link to Pink,” a film screening and panel discussion with local medical professionals to kickoff Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 1 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Fannie Lou Hamer Room located in the John F. Scarpa Academic Center at 3711 Atlantic Ave. Free parking is available.

“Link to Pink” is open to the public and will include the screening of the award winning film, “Love, Danielle,” followed by a Q&A with co-writer and star Devin Sidell and Executive Producer Amy Byer Shainman, the BRCA Responder. The film was recently selected as part of the Garden State Film Festival’s “Best of the Fest” outreach program.

Inspired by Sidell’s real-life experience, “Love, Danielle” follows Danielle Sidell, a bakery owner navigating the life altering choice of removing her breasts and ovaries to reduce her cancer risk after testing positive for a BRCA gene mutation. Her older sister Amy (Jamie King) is already undergoing chemotherapy for a breast cancer diagnosis, adding urgency to Danielle’s journey. As she contemplates what to do, Danielle juggles her marriage and her relationship with her recovering alcoholic mother (Lesley Ann Warren) and self absorbed TV star father (Barry Bostwick). What unfolds is a story of personal agency, family dynamics and learning to listen to your inner voice.

A panel discussion with local genetic counselors and medical professionals from AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, South Jersey Breast Cancer Coalition, who specialize in breast cancer and BRCA gene mutations, and Breast Center of New Jersey - comprised of doctors affiliated with The Premier Surgical Network, The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction and The Plastic Surgery Center, will take place after the screening. Also, information and representatives from local organizations such as Stockton University’s Wellness Center, JScreen Genetic Screening and Cancer Support Community NJ at Gilda’s Club, will be available to answer questions and offer resources.

This is a free event, though donations for Stockton’s Food Pantry will be accepted.

Register at stockton.edu/atlantic-city/linktopinkevent.html. Walk-ins are also welcome.

“Love, Danielle” was made possible by the generous support of private donations, grants and support from Mentor Own the Day and Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, through its fiscal sponsor, Cinefemme.
