Northfield police announced a sad ending to a local man who had been reported missing.
Jefferson Smith was last seen Sept. 9, police previously reported.
At 11 a.m. Thursday, his body was found in a secluded wooded area in Birch Grove Park.
Next of kin was notified. The matter is still under investigation, police said.
Northfield police extended their condolences to Smith’s family and loved ones, and asked the public to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.
They thanked several agencies who assisted in the search, including Atlantic County Search and Rescue, Atlantic County Emergency Management, Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, Atlantic County Sheriff's Office, Camden County Search and Rescue, Cape May County Search and Rescue, Northfield Office of Emergency Management, Mid-Atlantic Search and Rescue Canine Team, Central Jersey Search and Rescue Canine Team, Northfield Fire Department, and the NJ State Forest Fire Service.
Northfield police also thanked members of the community for their care, concern, informational tips and individual efforts in attempting to assist in locating Smith.
"It was clear that Mr. Smith was cared for greatly by the community," police said.
