Mosaic Foundation offers artistic outlet for JOAS senior citizens

  • Community

ATLANTIC CITY — A simple vase, a burst of colorful flowers, and a room full of quiet concentration came together recently at Beron Jewish Older Adult Services where seniors experienced the restorative power of art therapy. The creative workshop, led by local artist Laurie Staller, was made possible through support from the Mosaic Foundation.

Sessions are designed to enhance emotional well-being, encourage self-expression, and foster social connection, which are key components of healthy aging and helpful to those confronting Alzheimer’s and dementia. Participants in the program are guided through accessible creative projects that blend visual art with elements of nature, encouraging both mindfulness and joy. The workshops are especially impactful for seniors experiencing cognitive changes, offering a meaningful way to engage the senses and foster connection in a supportive setting

“Art can hold space for healing in ways conversation sometimes can’t,” said Erin Luurtsema, director of Philanthropy at Mosaic. “In the stillness, there was purpose and expression - something quietly restorative. This session reminded me that art offers an outlet far deeper than we often give it credit for. It can help patch cracks caused by memory loss or lived trauma, and create moments of pride, presence, and beauty, even if only for a moment.”

Programs are available for booking throughout the region. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to inquire about funding support through Mosaic. For-profit partners are welcome to participate at a program rate. To learn more or to schedule a therapeutic gardening session, please contact [email protected] or 609-916-6520.
