MAYS LANDING — The New Jersey Council for the Humanities and Journalism + Design at the New School are partnering with Atlantic Cape Community College to create and deliver non-credit Community Reporting and Community Journalism workshops and courses starting Feb. 10.

The workshops will equip people with the tools to better articulate what is happening in their communities. This year, the college has expanded its offerings to include a Community Reporter Workshop as a starting point. Atlantic Cape’s community journalism certificate will help students become an active contributor to local news throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Community Reporting Workshop Series will be taught by Michelle Dawn Mooney. The workshop will provide foundational information needed to become a community reporter and understand the elements of event and activity reporting. The workshop will cover skills needed to tell local stories. Students will produce articles for publication in a local paper, community newsletters, or on social media.

The four-week workshop will cover topics such as understanding the basics, credibility and ethics, interviewing and note-taking, and video recording tips. Participants who attend all three sessions are eligible to attend an in-person session to record their “news piece.” A tripod and Bluetooth microphone set will be provided.

Beginning Feb. 10 to March 6, (Zoom Sessions: 2/10, 2/17 & 2/24; In-person sessions week of March 3.)

Community Journalism Course taught by Assistant Professor of English and Communication Dr. Jennifer Field. The 12-week online course will delve into the foundations of community journalism and cover topics, such as what’s news to you, how to think like a journalist, find credible information, see the big picture, introduction to interviewing, practice deep listening, and design a civic news product and portfolio development.

Field will guide students through the content during the first four weeks of the course, preparing them for the final four weeks, “The Community Newsroom.” During the newsroom portion of the course, participants will collaborate to develop and complete three “news products” that are publication ready. Participants who complete the program by producing three “news products” will receive a digital badge, a micro recorder w/case, a reporter’s bag, and reporter’s notebooks. Beginning March 23 to June 8, (Weekly Zoom sessions are required for the final four weeks of the course.)
