BJE Lunch & Learn: The Jewish History of Sarajevo. 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Shirat Hayam, 700 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor

Sarajevo’s Jewish story begins with exile and survival. After the expulsion from Spain in 1492, Sephardic Jews rebuilt their lives in the Balkans, helping shape Sarajevo as the “Jerusalem of Europe.” One of the most important surviving Jewish manuscripts in the world, the Sarajevo Haggadah endured centuries of exile, war, and genocide. By the early 20th century, an Ashkenazi Jewish community had also taken root, adding to the city’s layered Jewish identity. This program traces the arc of Jewish life in Sarajevo from flourishing to destruction, postwar rebuilding, and renewed violence in the 1990s, exploring what remains of this once-vibrant community and what its survival means today.  This brunch program is free, a $5 donation is requested. BJE Brunch & Learn: Between Myth & Midrash, 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Katz JCC, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate

From the depths of the sea to the edges of the wilderness, Jewish scripture is filled with strange, powerful, and sometimes unsettling creatures. This program explores the monsters, beasts, and bizarre beings that appear throughout the Torah, Midrash, rabbinic literature, and Jewish imagination, from Leviathan and Behemoth to lesser-known figures that blur the line between myth and meaning. Together, we will examine what these creatures reveal and why these ancient figures continue to fascinate and challenge us today. This brunch program is free, a $5 donation is requested.
