At its meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Atlantic County Board of County Commissioners honored Ray Ellis of Egg Harbor Township during Black History Month. The tribute is given to an exceptional resident in recognition of service to the community and contributions that reflect the spirit of Black History and leadership that will inspire future generations.
“The Atlantic County Board of County Commissioners and County Executive Dennis Levinson are pleased to honor Ray Ellis,” Commissioner Chairman John Risley said. “The gift of time is the greatest gift we can give. I know that Mr. Ellis’ contributions as a youth coach for over 44 years have touched many lives. Ray Ellis is an Atlantic County treasure.”
Ellis is a lifelong public servant and community leader with deep roots in Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township. A retired police officer and juvenile detective, Ellis dedicated his career to protecting and mentoring young people, working in law enforcement, education and youth services.
Ellis is a longtime youth football coach and is known for his visibility, approachability, and willingness to help. He has earned respect for consistently putting his community first.
Ellis serves on the Egg Harbor Township Committee and was selected to serve as deputy mayor in 2025 and 2026, becoming the first African American to hold that position in the township’s history.
