Boards of Commissioners in Downbeach towns have passed resolutions designating the month of August as Veterans Appreciation month.
Veteran Ed Dixon has been attending commissioner meetings over the last several weeks requesting towns adopt a resolution in support of veterans of the Armed Forces who have answered the call and given years of their lives on land, sea and air in support of their nation.
Dixon said their selfless contributions have enabled the United States to celebrate its 250th year since being founded through the Declaration of Independence.
Longport Board of Commissioners Feb. 18 presented Dixon with a framed copy of Resolution 2026-19 designating the month in honor of veterans.
“The brave men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces made great sacrifices to protect the freedom and democracy of the United States…and deserve to be honored during the entire month of August and throughout the year,” the resolution states.
The Margate board approved its resolution Feb. 19 and thanked Dixon for bringing his proposal to the board.
“Veterans have borne the burdens of war and demands of peace, safeguarding the liberties and security enjoyed by all Americans. It is vital to instill in all citizens, especially the youth, a deep respect for service members of the Armed Forces and the significance of their role in safeguarding freedom, humanitarian values and peace,” the resolution states.
Both communities have instituted banner programs honoring veterans. Banners, each honoring a notable veteran of the community, are erected in prominent locations during the summer months, from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.
Dixon said he hopes to see Veterans Appreciation Month adopted in all municipalities across the country.
