Downbeach towns issue storm advisories

  • Public Safety

All three Downbeach communities have issued advisories about the pending snowstorm that will include blizzard-like conditions, heavy snow up to 18-24 inches, high winds and moderate to major flooding.

Ventnor’s early Sunday morning robo call advised motorists to expect flooding during high tide periods on Dorset Avenue that will close the Dorset Avenue bridge.

Sunday night high tide is at 11:09 p.m.; 12:30 a.m. bayside. Flooding can begin an hour earlier and last an hour later. The forecast is predicting 7.9-8.32 feet above ground level, with 1-2 feet of inundation in low-lying areas. Major flooding begins at 8 feet.

Residents are advised to move their vehicles to higher ground. Roads may become impassable.

“Please act now and do not wait until conditions worsen," the city advised.

Blizzard conditions and flooding could cause life-threatening travel impacts that will last through Monday and beyond.

“Please take this storm very seriously,” Ventnor Mayor Tim Kriebel said. “Prepare now and stay off the roads.”

Margate is anticipating up to 18 inches of snow, high winds and flooding.

“Our main concerns include Blizzard Warnings, Gale Force Winds gusting to over 50 miles per hour, and Coastal Flood Warning for Moderate to Major Flooding,” the public was advised.

In addition to advising residents to move their vehicles to higher ground, it is also requesting residents prepare by removing loose items around your properties.

“Please stay off the roads and let our Public Works Department do their job safely removing the snow. Also, it will allow our first responders to handle any emergency situation without any impediment.”

Longport is asking residents to park vehicles in driveways to allow Public Works crews to clear the roads and keep them accessible.

“The Longport Police Department is on duty 24/7 and ready to assist residents and visitors,” a post stated.

NJ Gov. Mikie Sherrill has issued a State of Emergency staring noon Sunday.

Local meteorologists have said this storm will likely mimic Winter Storm Jonas of 2016, when residents had street flooding and icebergs floating in the stormwater.
