A downed wire off Tilton Road in Northfield sparked a fire that melted the asphalt during Sunday night's snowstorm, fire officials said.
"While we often warn about the dangers of downed electrical wires, last evening’s incident helps put the hazard into perspective," the Northfield Volunteer Fire Company wrote on its Facebook page. "The downed primary wires generated enough heat and energy to melt the asphalt, causing the roadway to burn and deform."
The road is not the only danger, the post notes.
" Electricity can and will travel through the ground and kill a person — especially when aided by snow and road salt — and may extend more than 100 feet from the downed wires," the post warned.
Atlantic County placed traffic barrels to warn motorists of the affected area where the guide wires melted into the roadway.
Crews were expected to try to level the surface Monday morning to prevent damage to vehicles. Road restrictions remain in effect until at least noon.
People are warned to stay away from down wires and report any immediately to 911.
Walking or driving over them can be deadly.
