Delaware woman arrested in Ventnor hit-and-run that injured elderly pedestrian

  • Crime-Courts

A Delaware woman has been arrested in a hit-and-run that left a 92-year-old Ventnor pedestrian seriously injured.

Leslie Myers is shown on video surveillance speeding before striking the victim, who landed on the hood of her vehicle, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.

The pedestrian, whose name was not released, used the crosswalk at Newport Avenue to walk across Ventnor Avenue toward his parked vehicle, surveillance video taken from Bloom's Liquor Store shows, the affidavit states.

He is seen slowly walking off the crosswalk as he approaches the driver's side of his parked vehicle, according to the report.

Myers' vehicle is seen heading west on Ventnor Avenue at a high rate of speed, the affidavit states. She does not brake or even slow down.

Once the vehicle strikes the man, it veers into oncoming lane and continues west.

Police were called to Ventnor and Newport avenues at 6:16 p.m. Nov. 20, after the man was struck and the driver fled.

He was found lying in the roadway on his back.

The man's wife told police he was hospitalized for about two weeks and will require "extensive physical therapy," the affidavit states.

Police are waiting for a full list of injuries from AtlantiCare, but indicate he did suffer injuries to his head and neck area.

Myers, 51, of Wilmington, Dela., was identified as the driver after an investigation that included Ventnor police officers in the Patrol Division and the Detective Bureau, Capt. David Gaeckle said.

She was charged on a warrant for assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury along with several motor vehicle summonses.

Myers was taken into custody Wednesday by O'Hara Township police in Pennsylvania, Gaeckle said.

She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail pending extradition to Atlantic County.

Officer Raymond Snyder investigated the case, with help from Detective Damian Guanchez.

“This case was extremely impactful to my officers," Police Chief Joseph Wootton said. "They put in a lot of hours identifying the accused and bringing charges forth. I am proud of the hard work and effort they went through in bringing closure to this investigation.”

Ventnor police thanked assisting agencies, including New Castle County Police in Delaware and O’Hara Township police.
