A Somers Point family is asking for help after a devastating fire New Year's Day.
Somers Point firefighters were called to the home in the 700 block of Second Street just before noon, according to the fire company's post about the call.
Engine 44 initiated fire suppression operations and conducted a primary search of the structure, while Engine 46 secured a water supply and checked for fire extension.
No injuries were reported, but the home is uninhabitable.
The family had issues getting homeowners insurance due to the home's age, so everything is being paid out of pocket, according to a GoFundMe started by Darlene Burgos, whose daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren lived in the home.
Homeowners insurance is not required in New Jersey, although most mortgage companies require it.
"They are now facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding while also caring for two young children and trying to regain a sense of normalcy after such a traumatic event," Burgos wrote. "Any donation — big or small — will help cover essential repairs, housing needs, and basic necessities as they begin this long road to recovery."
