LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners Jan. 15 held its annual reorganization meeting and heard from Zoning Officer Bruce Funk about the status of the borough’s National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System, which provides discounts on flood insurance premiums.
Funk reported that the borough’s participation in the NJ Coastal Coalition, which includes New Jersey shore towns investigating ways to build more resilient communities, has helped the borough improve its CRS rating. Longport was a founding member of the coalition, which formed shortly after Hurricane Sandy. The goals of the organization are to educate the public about flooding risks, coordinate efforts to prevent injury and property damage and develop sound floodplain management practices.
The borough joins Margate and Ventnor and weather forecasters in holding an annual education program about the flood insurance program and how residents can prepare themselves and their properties during extreme weather events. During the last several years, the program has been held during Ventnor’s concerts at Ski Beach, which draws hundreds of local residents and visitors to the Jersey shore.
According to Funk, Longport has 1,749 properties valued at more than $296 million with 61% of them enrolled in the NFIP. Those property owners pay $916,284 in flood insurance premiums averaging $873 a year. The Community Rating System currently offers a 25% discount on the cost of flood insurance, saving policy holders $229,071 annually. Since 2016, the program has saved policyholders nearly $2 million in premium payments.
The board made the following professional appointments:
The board also renewed its service contract with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority for trash removal and recycling, and agreed to apply for a $70,000 Local Recreation Improvement Grant to purchase beach mats. It also agreed to allow residents to pay their taxes, water and sewer bills, and building permit fees and fines, electronically. Municipay LLC of New York City will provide the service at no cost to the borough.
The board also introduced an ordinance amending building permit fees. A public hearing on the ordinance will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
