A fire burned a classroom inside a Galloway Township elementary school just after midnight Monday morning.
Galloway police and several of the township's volunteer fire companies were dispatched to the Arthur Rann Elementary School, where fire and smoke were coming out of the building.
The fire was in Classroom 8, and was quickly extinguished thanks to the quick response of fire services, police said.
The fire was contained to the one classroom but several neighboring classrooms sustained minor damage.
The cause remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
District administrators are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage, Superintendent Stephen Santilli said in a message posted on the school district's site.
"As is typical with any fire event, there was some damage from the fire itself, as well as water damage and smoke affecting a portion of the building," he wrote.
The district does have control of the building and is coordinating with their insurance provider and appropriate professionals to determine the next steps.
Galloway Township police thanked those who responded, including fire personnel from Bayview, Oceanville, Pomona and the Atlantic City International Airport, along with Galloway EMS, Office of Emergency Management and the Absecon Police Department.
