Margate to revise water billing cycle

  • Government

MARGATE – The city is planning to revise its water usage billing cycle to match its calendar-year sewer billing cycle.

According to Tax Collector Tara Mazza, the city will request an extra payment totaling $100 that will be due Sept. 1, 2026. The extra coupon for $100 represents the cost of four months of water service adjusted to coincide with sewer billing.

The bill will not increase the amount due for water but will simply adjust the billing cycle. An adjustment of $100 will be for residents with 1-inch lines. Commercial properties with a 1.5-inch line will have a $150 adjustment, while those with 2-inch lines will have a $200 adjustment.

“The reason is for this is that it will allow for easier computing for final recent settlements, align the calendar year for sewer billing, and be less confusing for homeowners when they receive their bill…” she said.

The adjusted billing cycle will come in line with the municipal budget which is also based on the calendar year.

Mazza said the change will not affect billing for excess water usage because readings can be made remotely and billed as necessary.

Mayor Michael Collins said the change “makes sense.”

Commissioners Cathy Horn and Maury Blumberg questioned how the city would inform residents of the change.

Mazza said the city would advertise the change on the city website, on social media and that a notice would be placed in the next bill.

The change would solidify the adjustment this year, and in 2027, the bill would go out as normal on March 1 with payment due on June 1, she said.

The next mailing to residents will be sent on Feb. 10, explaining the change.
