Atlantic County traffic crackdown leads to 137 stops, four arrests

  • Public Safety

Atlantic County law enforcement agencies made 137 stops and issued 106 traffic summonses earlier this month as part of a traffic crackdown to eliminate fatal crashes.

The Atlantic County Association of Chiefs of Police partnered with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police as part of Target Zero.

Law enforcement agencies in Absecon, Atlantic City, Brigantine, Egg Harbor Township, Hamilton Township, Hammonton, Mullica, Pleasantville, Stockton University and the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office conducted traffic enforcement efforts Jan. 16, as part of

Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township each charged a driver with driving while intoxicated. Stockton University police and the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office each also made an arrest.

"Tragedy should not result from unsafe driving," the county group wrote in a news release. "Everyone who operates a motor vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle or walks along our roadways must embrace safer strategies and approaches when traveling on New Jersey roadways."

Enforcement is just one part, they said.

They also challenged drivers to be part of the solution by slowing down, obeying speed limits, stopping at intersections with traffic control devices, eliminating distracted driving by putting phone down, not driving impaired and being more attentive to surroundings, other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

"We ask that everyone be more patient and drive sensible," the group wrote.
