Galloway Township elementary school remains closed after fire

The aftermath of a fire will keep one Galloway Township closed Wednesday.

The Arthur Rann Elementary School had a fire in a classroom just after midnight Monday morning.

The move is being made out of caution for the safety of students and staff, Superintendent Stephen Santilli said in a letter to the district community.

"While the fire was primarily contained to one classroom, there was a lot of smoke and soot damage throughout the building," he wrote. "We have been working with fire inspectors, our insurance company and Servepro around the clock to determine anticipated return timelines."

That will rely in part on the results of air quality testing that is underway, he said.

The goal is to return those students as soon as possible, with requirements to make up the time they miss.

A plan is being worked out to put Arthur Rann students and staff in other buildings, until all or part of the school can be opened, Santilli said.

An at least tentative plan is expected Wednesday.
