Dog rescued, firefighter injured in Egg Harbor Township house fire

  • Atlantic County

A dog was rescued and a firefighter injured in a house fire Monday afternoon.

Egg Harbor Township volunteer firefighters from Scullville, Cardiff, Bargaintown and Farmington responded to the fire on Laguna Drive, according to the report.

Police were called to the scene just before 3 p.m., after a passerby saw smoke billowing from the residence  at 207, Lt. Larry Graham said.

Officers were met with flames and smoke coming from the home.

Officers Darren Hewitt and Chris Wagner made several attempts to make contact with the homeowners before knocking down the door to make sure no one was inside.

There were no people found, but the family dog was rescued and handed to a neighbor outside, Graham said.

Township firefighters along with mutual aid from Northfield and Somers Point battled the blaze for more than an hour.

Egg Harbor Township EMS and AtlantiCare Paramedics already on scene treated a firefighter who was injured while inside the home. Details were not provided.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to have started accidentally in a heating unit in the attic.
